Our first seismometer reading
On our second night in Iceland as soon as we set up camp, we got out our seismometer. Iceland can experience up to 80 earthquakes a day, so there was a very good chance we might record one. Paul Denton from the British Geological Survey has loaned us two portable seismometers, one of which we set up at our camp in Oxarfjorour.
They’re really easy to set up and the best part is, as soon as it’s plugged in it starts doing stuff – you get the lines squiggling across the screen (the technical term!). Paul nearly got an excited phone call in the middle of the night until we realised the big spike was in fact the car’s door being slammed. Oh well. Plenty more opportunities.
